Baltimore will again play host to the biggest festival of light in the United States. Light City Festival returns to Charm City from March 31 - April 8 to unite artists and innovators from around the region and even the world once more in a unique celebration of Baltimore's limitless creative capacity.
A 1.5 mile walk around Baltimore's Inner Harbor will feature 58 stunning, large-scale visual light displays. The light works will be complemented by circus acts, over 30 live music performances, and six conferences focused on social change. The festival brought 400,000 visitors to the event last year, and this year's event slogan of "Bigger, Brighter, Bolder" hints that number may only grow.
The festival will kick off on Friday, March 31 at 8:00pm with the Light City Creative Alliance Parade, a can't miss event with floats, performers, and musicians. Conferences and panels on relevant social issues will occupy much of the festival's day time schedule throughout the week. Musical acts will start each night at 5:15pm, with the light displays being "plugged in" at 7:00pm. While the biggest events will, of course, take place along Baltimore's Inner Harbor waterfront, neighborhoods and venues throughout the city will also host different aspects of the festival. BGE Light Art Walk To Dazzle Inner Harbor
The BGE Light Art Walk is a 1.5 mile trek around the harbor from Rash Field in the south to Harbor East on the north side. The walk features 58 separate, multi-faceted and interactive light displays. We've highlighted a few can't miss pieces:
- "Drift" will celebrate Baltimore's maritime past with a new, creative twist. Berlin artist Stephanie Imbeau will cover three sailboats with umbrellas, and of course illuminate them in captivating luminous swirl.
- A fan favorite from 2016 returns with the "Peacock", a 40 foot wide by 20 feet tall plume that expands hydraulically and has a stunning 15,000 LED bulbs.
- "Communication Gaps" is a fun interactive work that forces the view to use their movements to direct light projections on the water itself from area to area. Enter into conversation with a partner across the canal through a unique form of self-expression!
- Light up the night by hopping on one of the seesaws at "Impulse", located along the west wall of the Inner Harbor. Rock back and forth to activate the sounds and lights that emit from your seesaw.
