Your Guide to Navigating Washington DC's Project SafeTrack!

Commuters across the Washington DC Metro area are bracing for the first effects of a comprehensive maintenance overhaul of the regions Metrorail system. Started earlier this month, project "SafeTrack" will condense three years of needed safety improvements into an 11 month period, bringing with it closures and delays throughout the system and sending workers headed to the District scrambling for alternate methods of transportation as they attempt to arrive at the office each day with their sanity intact.

Keeping informed of the latest closures and harnessing the power of a few helpful resources can enable commuters to stay one step ahead of the madness and take control of their trip to work.

The "SafeTrack" Summer Schedule

The WMATA and Federal Transit Administration deemed project SafeTrack to be necessary and urgent after years of constant safety hazards and unreliability throughout the ailing Metro. The project will take place in 15 separate phases or "surges" and impact areas along nearly all 181 miles of track in the system. While residents of Northern Virginia will feel the most immediate effects from the early phases of the project, displaced rail riders who head for the roads will send a ripple effect throughout the city and gridlock the area during rush hour times. Here's what's happening in the early stages of the summer:

June 4 - 16:
  • Continuous single tracking on Orange and Silver Lines between East Falls Church and Ballston
  • 73,000 weekday trips will be impacted, service west of Ballston will be reduced by over 50%
  • Orange and Silver line train frequency will be reduced to every 18 minutes
June 18 - July 3:
  • Line segment shutdown between Eastern Market and Minnesota Ave/Benning Road
  • Stadium-Armory and Potomac Ave stations will be CLOSED
  • Reduced service at all Orange, Blue, Silver line stations
July 5 - 11:
  • Line segment shutdown between National Airport and Braddock Road
  • Blue, Yellow line trains run every 12 minutes
July 12-18:
  • Line segment shutdown between National Airport and Pentagon City
  • 50% reduction in rail service south of the Pentagon
Single tracking will not begin on the Red Line north of DC until August. For a full list of the 15 expected surges throughout the year click here
